THE 16-year-old male client who escaped last month at the Department of Youth Affairs was able to leave the compound by crawling through a worn-out mesh barricade.
DYA Director Adonis Mendiola said whenever new clients come into dorms, they would bend the wire mesh back and forth long enough and to the point where the wire would eventually break.
“They would have to have done this over time,” he said, adding the escape was in an older area of the Mangilao facility.
Mendiola said they are going to be recruiting more staff to help prevent escapes.
DYA also has four new officers who are going through Juvenile Justice Awareness training so other law enforcement officers can be acclimatized to handling youth clients.

Recruiting more staff...sounds good. Cheaper to fix the mesh fence or make it steel bars, but heck more staff is fine
