Light winds bring rain over the weekend

THE heavy rain Guam residents encountered over the weekend is not due to a tropical depression that’s forming northeast of the island.

Brandon Aydlette, National Weather Service forecaster, said the rain was caused by light surface winds that stream over the island. During the daytime, the sun warms up the ground and creates extra heating, resulting in an uplift and rain showers.

“And with the light winds coming over the island, these clouds don’t move. They just kind of sit in place,” he said, thus causing rain and flooding in parts of the island.

Affected areas of the island included central and northern Guam.

“This is just typical of the wet season,” he said.

Today, residents can expect scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and in the evening before 7 p.m. Skies will be partly sunny with a high near 88 degrees throughout the day, but then the weather becomes partly cloudy. Temperature will be about 77 degrees tonight.

There is a high-surf advisory in effect until 6 p.m. today along west-facing reefs. Hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet can be expected today.

Residents should take necessary precautions and avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those areas along west-facing reefs as rip currents are life-threatening.
