New bill moves veterans ‘to the front of the line’

  • PDF

A NEW bill has been introduced which would provide more benefits to the veterans community.

Bill 494-31 proposes to add veterans to the Better Customers Service Policy, allowing veterans, along with senior citizens and individuals with mobility disabilities, to move to the front of the line for customer service requests and payments.

The bill was co-sponsored by Sens. Aline Yamashita, Mana Silva Taijeron and Sam Mabini on Aug. 3 as a small gesture of gratitude and appreciation for the armed forces.

If passed, veterans can utilize this privilege if they choose to.

Veterans face several issues in transitioning to civilian life, Yamashita noted, including medical, transportation, housing and employment difficulties.

As a veteran, I am opposed to this bill.

Disabled veterans are already covered by current law. Appreciation is shown to veterans already with free drivers licenses. There are thousands of veterans on island in the form of retirees, former active duty, guard and reserve members, not to mention all the current guard and reserve members who hold veteran status from their active duty days.

The lines are seriously long already, and this will only add to the wait for the common folk and will certainly cause tempers to flare.

Myself, I'd be ashamed to step to the front because I'm a veteran, in front of 100 others who have waited in line for hours.

It's great to be honored, but we serve in an all volunteer force. Personally, I feel my service is appreciated already by the vast majority of Americans.
