THE Environmental Literacy Institute, jointly organized by the University of Guam and the Guam Department of Education, held its first session at the UOG Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration.
According to a press release, the two-day workshop features discussions on designing and integrating a new curriculum, resource networks, exchange of ideas, future training opportunities, and presentations by environmental practitioners.
“Environmental literacy is the key to protecting Guam’s natural resources,” said Laura Biggs, scientist and University of Guam Sea Grant administrator. With that goal in mind, UOG’s Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute (WPCRI), Sea Grant, and Professional and International Programs are partnering with the Guam Department of Education to offer a free two-day Environmental Literacy Curriculum Institute workshop.
“Along with UOG, we are working to develop a comprehensive, interactive and place-based environmental literacy curriculum for Guam’s teachers and students,” said Eloise Sanchez, GDOE Division of Curriculum and Instructional Improvement school program consultant.
“This is part of our overarching strategy to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by partnering with teachers to strengthen our STEM curriculum.”
The workshop is free to science teachers from “Metgot” or Standards Based elementary schools as well as all public middle school science teachers, according to the press release.
