A MAN faces up to 14 years in prison after a Superior Court of Guam jury yesterday found him guilty of criminal sexual conduct involving a female minor whom he sexually assaulted over a three-year period.
Juan Jose Torres, originally from Peru, was convicted of third degree criminal sexual conduct as a second degree felony and two counts of assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct as a third degree felony, the Attorney General's Office announced in a press release.
According to the AGO, Torres first sexually assaulted his victim when she was 15 years old up until she was 18. The victim reported the sexual assault to the Guam Police Department where they immediately took her to Healing Hearts to be examined and treated.
DNA samples were also obtained for testing.
Without the victim on-island to testify during trial, the AGO, with the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was able to bring a DNA expert to Guam to testify on the scientific evidence, which came back a positive match for the defendant, the release stated.
“Thank you to the FBI for their invaluable assistance in providing DNA testimony and DNA results for this case. I’d also like to give special thanks to the Guam Police Department and Healing Hearts. They followed established protocol, and as a result, we were able to bring this criminal to justice,” chief prosecutor J. Basil O’Mallan stated in the release.
Torres is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 31. He is also expected to register as a Level I sex offender, the AGO stated.
