AS ANNOUNCED by the Governor’s Office, the Adopt-a-School program will be launched this Saturday, Aug. 4. Show time at each campus is 7 a.m.
As part of the program, agencies have been requested by the Governor’s Office to coordinate with their respective adopted schools or Guam Department of Education maintenance for the supplies and materials needed for cleaning, painting and yard maintenance.
Aside from the executive branch volunteers, several organizations have stepped up and joined the islandwide initiative. These groups include the Guam Women’s Tackle Football Association, 644 Combat Comm (U.S. Air Force), 36th CRG (U.S. Air Force), 36th EMS Med. Group (U.S. Air Force), Hotel Nikko Guam, and J&B Modern Tech.
The Republican senatorial candidates will also be providing lawn maintenance to the athletic fields of each school while the Guam Power Authority will be assisting schools in need of electrical wiring and air-conditioning repair. They will also be pulling trees out of the George Washington and Simon Sanchez High School campuses.
Earlier in July, Gov. Eddie Calvo directed all departments and agency heads under the executive branch to adopt a public school in time for the opening of the school year in August.
In particular, Calvo encouraged each agency of the executive branch to adopt one public school for “painting, general cleaning and yard work.”
The directive also included mobilizing support from the private sector and sweat equity from volunteers.
Calvo emphasized he wants students to have better school campuses on the first day of classes.
Those interested in volunteering in the program are encouraged to contact Troy Torres at the Governor’s Office at 475-9304 or 486-8887, or through email at troy.torres[at]guam.gov.
