AGO headquarters falling apart?
THE Attorney General’s Office is asking the Department of Public Works to conduct an inspection of the decades-old Pedro’s Plaza building in Hagåtña to determine if it is structurally sound.
The building used to be the headquarters of the Guam Police Department before it moved to Tiyan. It was not used for a while until nearly 10 years ago when former AG Doug Moylan moved in. The AG’s Office currently occupies the building.
The inspection request was made in response to a news tip media received that the building may be on the brink of falling apart. Previous inspections deemed the building not in any danger of collapse.
AG Lenny Rapadas sent the request to DPW on July 19 to have their engineers conduct another visual inspection of the building.
“We requested a written documented report of inspection methodologies, design standards, findings and determinations. Today, DPW engineers conducted their visual inspections on the exterior of the building, the garage interior, and the west corner of the fifth and sixth floors,” Rapadas said in a statement.
“It is their recommendation that a structural engineer with the proper equipment assess the building for internal structural support. In the meantime, DPW engineers will review blueprints of the building, information on prior repairs, and inspection on previous reports conducted,” he added.
Rapadas also stated his office will ask the landlord to comply with the DPW's recommendations.
