AFTER the recent session at the Legislature on the proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget of the Guam Department of Education, Sen. Aline Yamashita expressed her support for the leadership of new GDOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez by stating: “In the two legislative hearings, thus far, it is clear that Superintendent Fernandez is student-driven and community-based.”
“Walking the school campuses and listening to the people as a first step is indicative of his priority for the school communities,” Yamashita stated in a press release.
According to Yamashita, “Fernandez’s priority of strengthening communication – internally and externally – resonates very well with the Families First! Office.”
“Many of our issues are about people not feeling a sense of belonging,” Yamashita stated. “This basic need – once addressed – will have us moving on to actually improving learning opportunities for all students.
“During Monday’s budget hearing, as Superintendent Fernandez took command of the dialogue, he was comfortable in having team members respond to a wide range of raised issues. The confidence and trust was reassuring and very welcome.”
She also commended Fernandez’s recent initiative, “Team Up to Clean Up,” to build community support and ownership of school communities. According to Yamashita, “Community engagement for our facilities is critical as it is for our curricular issues.”
Yamashita also said she “looks forward to a collaborative effort among the GDOE leadership, the Calvo-Tenorio administration and the 31st Guam Legislature to move things forward for the sake of our students, families and Guam.”
