AN INTERNAL affairs investigation has been launched at the Department of Corrections to probe the death of an inmate.
Corrections Officer Jeff Limo, acting spokesman, said the inmate, 43, checked in at DOC late in the evening of July 9 for a probation violation and was confined to Post 25, which houses individuals who violate their probation or are in contempt of court.
“In the early morning of July 10, he was experiencing shortness of breath. The officers responded and brought him down from Post 25 to the infirmary,” Limo said.
When officers brought the inmate to the infirmary to give oxygen, he added, the inmate passed out.
A registered nurse on-duty and DOC officers performed CPR. An ambulance and advance life support were also called to the scene. Medics took over and continued CPR.
Limo said the inmate was transported to Naval Hospital for further treatment, but died two days later.
Limo, who is assigned to the special operations response team and currently the internal affairs division, said they are looking into whether policies and procedures were followed in a timely manner.
The identity of the inmate is being withheld. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
