GUAM’s underwater archaeological sites will be explored in the following weeks. The 4th Annual Maritime Archeology Field School kicks off on Monday and will continue until July 20. The field school combines the difficulties of terrestrial archaeology digs and surveying with added complications of being underwater.

The field school includes in-class instruction as well as undersea exploration of Guam’s waters and the underwater cultural heritage sites.

Various technologies will be used to survey submerged sites.

Participants in the field school will receive international certification from the Nautical Archaeology Society.

University students can also obtain credits through the field school as it is registered as an Archeology course and a Micronesian Studies course.

The course is a project coordinated through the efforts of the University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Guam Preservation Trust, and the Micronesian Area Research Center.
