Carnival parking to be strictly enforced

LAW enforcement officials are warning residents who plan on going to the Liberation Day Carnival that they will be strictly enforcing the “no parking” law.

Department of Parks and Recreation Director Pete Calvo said discussions were conducted recently with regard to residents parking along Route 16.

“While the initial desire was to have an entry point from Route 16, which is not authorized, what we want to prevent are vehicles parking out there on Route 16 because of the probability for traffic accidents with cars backing out or pulling in,” he said.

Several “No Parking” signs were set up last Friday by DPR and the Mayors' Council, but there was no enforcement done. The "No Parking" signs are posted from the John Gerber Guam Main Facility down toward the football field next to the traffic intersection.

Calvo said the Department of Public Works declared the area a no-parking zone for safety reasons.

“We are going to meet with the Guam Police Department to follow through on our plan to declare that a no-parking zone and to have it enforced,” he said.

Residents have been seen parking in the area even though the signs are posted.

“We discourage that because as they pull in there, they use space that is as little as 2 feet. That, in itself, is dangerous,” he said. “Not only will they be safe, they won’t have to fight traffic as they get out of there.”
