High-speed ferries may operate in Guam waters

  • PDF

IN A letter to Sen. Judi Guthertz, acting Secretary Robert O. Work has announced that two high-speed ferries – the USNS Guam and the USNS Puerto Rico – may be operating in Guam’s waters.

The high-speed ferries are operated by the Military Sealift Command.

Tentative plans for the USNS Guam include transporting U.S. Marine Corps III Marine Expeditionary Forces in the Western Pacific area of operations. The USNS Puerto Rico, on the other hand, may support U.S. Marine Corps training exercises within the Guam area, though no final plans have yet been made.

“You can be assured that Guam’s strategic location and existing infrastructure will be taken into account when determining operating areas for HSFs (high-speed ferries) and joint high-speed vessels,” Work wrote.

Guthertz had suggested Guam as a homeport for the new vessels and will be in contact with the office of the Secretary of the Navy on this matter.

The USNS Guam was so named to honor the historical and military relationship between the U.S. and Guam.

Fabulous. So smart. Some other people are not too smart. Proud of Guam's mastery. Now start a program for seamanship training.
