(ODMB) – Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo yesterday congratulated the U.S. Army on the occasion of its 237th birthday. “I congratulate the U.S. Army on 237 years of dedicated service to our country,” Bordallo said. “The Army was created to defend our nation, and our soldiers have been critical to protecting our borders and other national security interests at home and abroad. In particular, the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve have been integral to our community on Guam and these citizen soldiers have played significant roles in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places across the globe.”

As the Army celebrates this milestone, Bordallo said people should reflect on how these conflicts have transformed these essential elements of the U.S. Army into an operational force that is cost-effective and flexible to meet the demands of 21st-century threats.  “The Army has and will remain an essential part of the Total Force and as our country refocuses on the Asia-Pacific region, it is important for Army leadership to articulate the role they will play in our new defense strategy,” Bordallo said.

“As we celebrate the founding of the Army, we must also remember the service of our sons and daughters from Guam who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. I continue to pray for the safe return of our brave men and women who are serving in harm’s way, and I wish the U.S. Army continued success for many more years to come.”
