Palau advances to semifinals

IN THE first two days of competition at the 9th Pacific Mini Games held in Wallis and Futuna, Team Guam had their fair share of battles on the sand during both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball event.

With the men out of medal contention and virtually being eliminated with a 1-2 record, Team Guam's only hope was in the women's division as the ladies held a 1-1 record heading into day three. The duo of Tatiana Sablan and Kendra Byrd had their work cut out for them, needing a win to advance.

The Guam duo entered the quarterfinals scheduled to take on a very formidable Solomon Islands team. In the opening set, both teams knew that a spot into the semifinals was at stake as both came out looking for the early edge, only to engage in a seesaw battle. Late in the set, Team Guam looked to secure the win. However, a determined Solomon Islands team managed to pull away and pick up the 21-18 victory.

Second-set action was much like the first as the Sablan/Byrd combination came out to take an early lead. However, the Solomon Islands weren't willing to take any risks and tightened the game after equalizing the score at 11-11 midway through.

Things didn't get any better for Team Guam as the Solomons closed out the match on a 10-6 run. With the loss, Sablan and Byrd were eliminated from medal contention. The victory by the Solomon Islands moves them into the semifinals where they battled against Vanuatu.

Team Palau entered their quarterfinals match ready to fight against a strong New Caledonia squad. Guam's regional neighbors needed only two sets (21-17, 21-17) to claim victory and head into the semifinals. Win or lose in the semis against Papua New Guinea, Palau will make the medal round.
