ARTICLES and comments regarding the “military footprint” keep popping up all over the local media, mostly attributable to elements in the Legislature who’d like to see a “free beer and barbecue” political status for Guam. In case you forgot the origin of that term or missed it in one of my (much) earlier writings, it was coined by a member of Congress to describe the kind of relationship that some Puerto Rican politicians seek and would dearly love to see.

LET’S see now – what was it, exactly, that Lt. Gov. and gubernatorial hopeful Mike Cruz told us following a series of legal and public relations blunders by police chief Paul Suba? Was it “If he doesn’t retire I’ll demote him to captain and put him in charge of special projects”? Or was it “If he doesn’t retire I’ll fire him”?

JUNE was an interesting month, news-wise. We saw the judge dismiss all charges against former governor Gutierrez and co-defendant Rios, though the attorney general is apparently unhappy with some elements of the ruling and seeks more information. Looks like more grief for Gutierrez on the way. We were also reminded that Mr. Gutierrez is under a court order to reimburse the Guam Memorial Hospital $300,000 for his part in alleged mishandling of public funds in a payment to Dr. Batoyan – twice the maximum allowed by law -- though she never actually filed a claim against GovGuam. I wish it were that simple for the rest of us.

IN NOVEMBER 2004 there was a tragic and needless fatal accident in Yigo near the Route 1-Gayinero Road intersection, directly in front of the Mobil/McDonalds. A young woman -- legally still a child at 17 -- was critically injured and died several days later without regaining consciousness. She ran a stop sign while attempting to make a left turn southbound onto Route 1 across traffic and was hit broadside by a pickup traveling north in the outermost lane.
