SEVERAL planned fundraising efforts to assist the family of Jessica Opinion, of Tamuning, are trying hard to break with the tradition of alcohol-related events to support such charitable causes.

Local and stateside friends have joined the endeavor to show support for the popular, young mother, as the 28-year old and her family begin the long, slow road to recovery from critical injuries sustained as the result of a crash related to drunk driving.

Opinion was evacuated to the Philippines for emergency medical care following the devastating accident Oct. 4.

“Team Jessica came together for Jessica, her son, and her family,” said Melinda Sanchez, a member of the group. “We wanted to be able to help Jessica during her transition from accident to recovery. We also wanted to be able to show her that she and her son are loved,” said Sanchez.

A group is meeting today to discuss a Halloween Cupcake Drive & other fundraising events to contribute to Jess' fund.

A 90's-themed fundraiser is planned for Oct. 20, and is being hosted by Team Jessica, Colors Red restaurant and Rock Star Energy Drink.

Friends in California have formed "Friends of Jessica” stateside and also plan to raise funds to include in a care package to Opinion.

An account has been set up at First Hawaiian Bank, and those who wish to support Jessica can visit First Hawaiian Bank and make a direct contribution to "Friends of Jessica Opinion."

“We are not focused on an exact amount, we are focused on being able to provide her something that will help her as she works on moving forward from her accident, and through her recovery,” said Sanchez
