Eloy Q. Benavente family withdraws name for schoolIN an overwhelming demonstration of objections, stakeholders of Wettengel Elementary School told Guam Public School System officials and members of the Guam Education Policy Board last night that they did not want the school's name changed.
On Oct. 22, the board renamed the school after former educator, Eloy Q. Benavente. The name was submitted by Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares.
Benavente's granddaughter, Genavieve B. P. Santos, a Liguan Elementary School teacher, and other family members, walked into the meeting and announced that the family was withdrawing Benavente's name for consideration.
Felix Benavente, a nephew, said at the meeting that he found it very disheartening that while Gov. Ivan C. Wettengel was a governor for just one year (from 1920 to 1921), his uncle was an educator for over 35 years.
During Wettengel's tenure, the U.S. Navy operated the first air station on Guam at Orote Peninsula.
Board chairman Joe San Agustin said that Benavente's name will be removed at its next board meeting.
