The Guam Amateur Boxing Federation yesterday announced the continuation of a series of boxing events that will eventually lead up to assembling a national team to represent the island in future competitions.

August 21 will bring the next competition to the Agana Heights Gymnasium, as part of an ongoing series of events that will culminate in an all-island boxing tournament early next year, which will in turn serve as a qualifier to select a Guam team to compete in the  South Pacific Games in New Caledonia in September of 2011.

GABF president Cano Collazo-Cruz said he is pleased the federation has been able to continue the competitions, which will hone boxers’ chops over the next year.

“This is getting their spirits and their skills up,” he said. “So that when these later tournaments come, they’re ready for it.”

The announcement specifies that mixed-martial arts fighters and military members are welcome to join in the fun by calling Collazo-Cruz at 483-9466.
