University of Guam students and faculty members kicked off the school’s 42nd annual charter day at the Mangilao campus yesterday, proving that UOG’s initiative to going “green” is alive and well.

Swarms of students and staff, many donning the school’s Go Green t-shirts, spent the day listening to live music, participating in carnival games and soaking up the sun.

However, students and faculty also used the annual festivities as a way to continue to educate the island community about the importance of preserving and protecting the environment.

The Green Army, a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting UOG’s green efforts created last year, was out in full force during yesterday’s festivities to get people thinking about recycling and protecting the island’s natural environment.

The green movement even showed up in the annual hut building competition. The School of Business and Public Administration unveiled its “Green Hut,” made entirely out of recyclable materials.

Business students also proved their dedication to the green initiative by hosting several presentations about going green in the business world.

The School of Business also unveiled plans for a green business plan competition which is scheduled for later this month.

Other UOG departments were also on hand during yesterday’s events to showcase student talent.

The university’s Army ROTC cadets gave a live demonstration for those gathered on how to infiltrate an enemy bunker.

UOG president Robert Underwood said the day’s festivities were a testimony to the school’s educational capabilities.

“UOG is a quality institution,” said Underwood, noting that he hopes more young people turn to UOG as their choice for higher education.
