Acting Governor Mike Cruz yesterday proclaimed March as Chamorro Month at the Chamorro Village in Hagatna.

Department of Chamorro Affairs executive director Sylvia Flores said the event also included a resolution presented by the 30th Guam Legislature to the department marking the 15th anniversary of Chamorro Village.

There were also performances from the St. Francis of Assisi Choir, Hurao Academy, and Inetnon Gef Pago.

Flores added that they also unveiled a Guam map that came from Virginia Maloney in the mainland.

According to Flores, Maloney was born on Guam when her father was in the Navy and stationed here between 1937 and 1940.

“Anything like this is always important when people want to return them to Guam. They also had beautiful photos and they will be turned over to the Guam Museum,” she said. “We’re seeing more and more of this where people have hundreds of photos of Guam that their grandfathers and great grandfathers have passed on to them,” she added.

The Chamorro Village will be abuzz with activity celebrating the island’s history.

Flores said that from 10 a.m. to 6 pm. on March 20, there will be several dance performances from native groups, a fashion show, a karaoke contest, and music from a Chamorro band.

“There’s going to be a lot of things we’re going to be doing here. All the crafters will be out selling their crafts,” she said.

Meanwhile, she said her staffers are visiting schools to talk to students about the significance of Guam’s history and the Chamorro people.

“This has always been a practice over the years,” she said.
