Former senator Rector arrested

FORMER senator Matt Rector was arrested yesterday and charged with two counts of unsworn falsification for failing to disclose information about an earlier arrest and misdemeanor conviction in California 26 years ago.

Guam Police Department spokesman John Edwards said Rector would be booked and released as he was only arrested for misdemeanor charges.

Rector, who had applied for a concealed firearms permit with GPD, failed to disclose the prior brush with the law on an application that required a comprehensive background check by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

At the time, the troubled former lawmaker insisted the omission was a case of unintentional oversight on his part and not a deliberate attempt to hide anything. Rector said he was – mistakenly - under the impression until that point in time that any previous misdemeanor conviction committed as a youth had been expunged.

The criminal record information became public knowledge after a GPD official leaked the confidential FBI report on Rector to KUAM. The aftermath of which further embroiled the former legislator, leading to his eventual resignation last month.

Rector was brought in to the Agana precinct at about 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

The Guam Federation of Teachers union president declined to speak with the press as he was led in handcuffs from an unmarked police car into the precinct.

GFT attorney Daniel Somerfleck soon followed Rector into the Hagåtña lockup but also declined comment.
