Incumbent senators, be they Democratic or Republican, are beholden (however that is defined to the reader) to the insurance companies as well as other business entities that receive favorable tax consideration at a time when Gov Guam leaks revenues, which is why any assistance for the people of Guam will only come from the federal government. Now, this does not mean that if there are new senators, that they will be any different in their behavior (or level of cowardice). So, the question is if these senators cannot stand up to local insurance companies in this context, what makes folks think they can stand up to the feds, if need be, on any of the long-standing issues that affect Guam? The answer is they cannot. It is purely for domestic political consumption -- and consideration -- that they have their inter-party and even intra-party squabbles. The non-Sunshine Democrats such as Sen. Ben Pangelinan like to point out the follies of every administration, but still cannot get more than 5,000 votes on the so-called Decolonization Registry. It is not his fault even as I have thanked him publicly for his lone effort on this matter. The truth is self-determination already came to Guam in 1950 when Carlos Taitano, among others, petitioned for U.S. citizenship. It is time for the people of Guam, I think, to move towards incorporation as a possible alternative political status as Kaleo Moylan, among others, have proposed.
